Coin from the famous Shipwreck EL CAZADOR 8 Rials 1783

SKU: 2023100

PRICE:

200,00

In stock

Description

Certified 8 Real Mexican coin by NGC. (The owners of the ship’s treasure asked NGC to certify the coins found in it with a special label so that there would be no doubts about the authenticity)

The ship set sail in 1874 from Vera Cruz, Mexico, loaded with thousands of silver coins bound for Louisiana (which was then a Spanish colony and was in huge financial trouble since the banknotes it was minting were not backed by silver or gold). For unknown reasons, it sank, and in 1993, a fisherman found silver coins in his nets that looked like Spanish coins….

The sinking of the El Cazador is considered the shipwreck that changed the history of Louisiana since it never reached it and thus its economy never recovered. The King of Spain Charles VI gave Louisiana to France to avoid getting involved in war. Three years later Napoleon sold it to America to Thomas Jefferson for 15 million dollars.
